Public appointment: Chair appointment extended on the NHS Shetland Board

The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Care Angela Constance MSP, today announced the extension to the appointment of Gary Robinson as Chair of the NHS Shetland Board.

Chair

Gary Robinson led the organisation through the coronavirus pandemic, ensuring the continued delivery of essential services across the isles. He has also overseen NHS Shetland’s recovery, including work to restore services and reduce waiting times.

Commenting on his extension, Mr Robinson said: “I look forward to continuing to define the future requirements of NHS Shetland’s estate, including the Gilbert Bain Hospital; working to further reduce waiting times, and seeing through the transition to electric vehicles.”

The extension provides continuity of leadership as the organisation continues to deliver its priorities for patients and communities.

Extension

This extension will be for 5 months and will run from 1 August 2026 to 31 December 2026.

This extension is regulated by the Ethical Standards Commissioner.

Remuneration

This extension is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £56,472 per annum for a time commitment of 3 days per week.

Gary Robinson does not hold any other public appointments.

Political activity

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. 

Gary Robinson had political activity within the last five years. He is an elected Independent councillor with no political affiliations, serving on Shetland Islands

Council. All of the political activity indicated (Obtained office as a local Councillor, MSP, MP, MEP; Stood as a candidate for one of the above offices; Spoke on behalf of a party or candidate) is in connection with this position. Mr. Robinson can also confirm that he have made no political donations during this period either.

NHS Shetland is responsible for meeting the health needs and improving the health of around 23,000 people living in the Shetland Islands.  NHS Shetland employs approximately 620 staff and provides a comprehensive range of acute, mental health, primary and community services.
