Public appointment: Chair appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board

The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Neil Gray MSP, today announced the appointment of Katharina Kasper as Chair of Lanarkshire NHS Board. 

Chair 

Katharina Kasper is an experienced Board Chair and non-executive director. She is Chair of Children’s Hearings Scotland and a Non-Executive Director of NHS Lothian. Katharina is also a Board Member of the Scottish Police Authority, where she chairs the Complaints and Conduct Committee. She brings deep expertise in governance, audit, risk management and financial oversight, underpinned by a senior executive career in financial services and professional advisory roles. Katharina has a strong understanding of Scotland’s health and social care system and is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability and public value. 

Appointment 

The appointment is for four years from 26 January 2026 to 25 January 2030. 

The appointment is regulated by the Ethical Standards Commissioner. 

Remuneration and time commitment 

The appointment attracts remuneration of £431.00  per day for a time commitment of 156 days per year. 

Other Ministerial appointments 

Ms Kasper is Chair of the Board of Children's Hearings Scotland and receives £256.00 per day for a time commitment of up to eight days per month. She is also a Member of the Scottish Police Authority and receives £325.00 per day for a time commitment of up to six days per month. Finally Ms Kasper is a Member of the Board of NHS Lothian and receives £276.00 per day for a time commitment of two days per week. Ms Kasper will stand down from NHS Lothian on taking up the NHS Lanarkshire Chair role. 

Political activity 

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. 

Ms Kasper has had had no political activity within the last five years. 

Background 

The Health Board’s role is to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Lanarkshire and to deliver high quality, person-centred care. In doing so, NHS Lanarkshire provides a comprehensive range of primary, community-based and acute and psychiatric hospital services for the population. NHS Lanarkshire is developing a business case to replace University Hospital Monklands, which will by capital value, be the largest capital project ever delivered by NHS Scotland. NHS Lanarkshire has two Health & Social Care Partnerships – covering North and South Lanarkshire. It also works in close strategic partnership with the University of Strathclyde, the University of the West of Scotland and Caledonian University.
