Background

In line with the GSS Geography Policy, the Office for National Statistics maintain a UK Register of Geographic Codes (RGC) for use in the production of official statistics.

The purpose of the Register of Geography Codes is to allow coordinated oversight of geography code changes, and to maintain the relationship between active and archived code ranges.

In Scotland, a separate register of geographic codes is maintained and published by the Scottish Government’s Office of the Chief Statistician.

All changes are passed onto the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to be held on the UK Register of Geography Codes. For cross-border or UK wide geographies, the Office for National Statistics normally lead on changes in consultation with stakeholders in Scotland.

Naming and coding policy

Scottish geography codes are created in line with a naming and coding policy for Scotland.
