Reconviction rate statistics: FOI release

Information requested

I would like to request statistical information held by Health and Justice Analytical Services relating to reconviction (reoffending) outcomes for men in Scotland.

For the most recent offender cohort(s) for which reconviction data are available (for example, 2018–19 onwards), please provide the following:

1. One-year reconviction rates for male offenders, broken down by:

• Age at index conviction, for offenders aged 20 to 60**(preferably by single year of age; otherwise the narrowest age bands available), and**
• Index offence group, using the standard offence classifications applied in the “Reconviction Rates in Scotland” publications.

2. For each age (or age band) and offence group, please provide:

• The percentage reconvicted within one year, and
•  The number of offenders in each category, where disclosure control allows.

3. Where disclosure control or small cell sizes prevent release of the requested breakdowns, I would be grateful if:

• Aggregated age bands (e.g. 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39 etc) could be provided, and/or
• Percentages could be rounded in line with standard statistical disclosure practices.

If these data are held within internal analytical datasets used to produce the “Reconviction Rates in Scotland” statistical series, I am content to receive extracted tables rather than a bespoke new analysis.

If any part of this request exceeds the cost limits set out in the Act, I would welcome advice on how the request could be refined to bring it within scope.

 

Response

I enclose a copy of all of the information you requested. I have provided the data as five year age groups to ensure that the numbers are large enough to calculate reconviction rates.
