Response
I can advise you as follows:
Q1. When was the A9 1000 Spey River Bridge last resurfaced? How much did this cost?
A1. A surfacing inlay (40mm) was carried out in 2020 the construction cost of this work was £22,050.
Q2. When was the bridge deck last refurbished? How much did this cost?
A2. The top deck was refurbished in two phases over 2024 and 2025. Phase 1 (Northbound lane) was completed between 9th September 2024 and 21st January 2025. Phase 2 (Southbound lane) was completed between 15th September 2025 and 18th December 2025. To date this scheme has cost £1.573M. This cost will be finalised once final measurement is completed.
Q3. Why is the A9 1000 Spey River Bridge now defective?
A3. The bridge is to be replaced as part of the A9 Dualling accordingly only minimal maintenance has been undertaken over recent years. The existing waterproofing which was installed in 2009 had reached the end of its life and the bridge was being monitored. Unfortunately, potholes began regularly forming presenting a hazard to drivers and it became apparent that the deck had now deteriorated to such a degree in places that it was no longer safe, practicable or cost effective to continue locally undertaking patch repairs. Accordingly, the deck was prioritised for urgent and essential maintenance works using value-management principles. This work included waterproofing replacement and repairs to the underlying concrete, which was undertaken in 2024 & 2025 as detailed at A2.
Q4. What plans are there to fix the current issues?
A4. The current plan is that the bridge will be replaced as part of the A9 Dualling Programme, which is the subject of the Budget announcements on 13 January 2026.
