Transport Scotland recent and historical traffic survey data – A835 Conon Bridge Junction: EIR release

Information request and response under the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004.

Information requested

'I am writing to request traffic survey data for the junction on the A835 where it connects to the B9163 (Conon Bridge) and the U3165 (road to Alcaig) just east of the Maryburgh Roundabout.
I understand that a traffic survey may have been completed within the last two years, and that a decision has been made suggesting the current junction design adequately meets existing turning traffic volumes. However, based on my own visual observations—particularly of left-turning movements from the A835 into Conon Bridge and toward Alcaig—I find this conclusion difficult to reconcile with actual traffic behaviour.
Even a basic count of turning vehicles during peak periods suggests that the current layout may not sufficiently accommodate present demand, let alone future growth. To better understand this, I would be grateful if you could share:

  • The most recent traffic survey data for this junction, including turning counts and peak-hour volumes
  • Any previous surveys (e.g. from the past 5–10 years) to help identify traffic trends over time
  • Any design assessments or modelling used to support the conclusion that the junction meets current traffic needs
  • Any planned improvements or monitoring strategies for this location'

Response

As the information you have requested is 'environmental information' for the purposes of the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004 (EIRs), we are required to deal with your request under those Regulations. We are applying the exemption at section 39(2) of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA), so that we do not also have to deal with your request under FOISA.

This exemption is subject to the 'public interest test'. Therefore, taking account of all the circumstances of this case, we have considered if the public interest in disclosing the information outweighs the public interest in applying the exemption. We have found that, on balance, the public interest lies in favour of upholding the exemption, because there is no public interest in dealing with the same request under two different regimes. This is essentially a technical point and has no material effect on the outcome of your request.'

Response to your request

Transport Scotland does not hold any information regarding a recent traffic survey at the site that you have highlighted. It is possible that this may have been undertaken by The Highland Council who can be contacted via their website

In the meantime, I have attached a file containing hourly and annual traffic counts from the traffic counters closest to the location that you highlighted. Please note that it is not possible to determine turning counts from these.
