Notes:

1. The main charge is the one that conferred the most severe penalty.

2. Data prior to 1989-90 are from an earlier version of Criminal Proceedings in Scotland statistics and were published by calendar year.

3. Data from 2020-21 onwards were affected by the pandemic, including court closures, restricted court capacities due to social distancing measures, delays to cases due to key participants having to selfisolate following testing positive for COVID-19 and shifts in case prioritisation to deal with the resulting backlogs. Data from this period should not be treated as indicative of long-term trends.
