Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

What data the Scottish Government collects on prosecutions and convictions for fraud offences, money laundering offences, and bribery offences, and please advise whether this is publicly available.

Response

The Scottish Government publishes data on people prosecuted and convicted in Scottish courts as Criminal Proceedings in Scotland. Data are published annually and the most recent publication covering the ten year period from 2013-14 to 2022-23 can be found here: Criminal Proceedings in Scotland, 2022-23 - gov.scot. The 2023-24 Criminal Proceedings in Scotland publication will be published later this year. This data counts people by main charge, which is the offence that conferred the most severe penalty. Offences are published under a statistical classification that includes Fraud as a distinct category however, money laundering and bribery are included alongside other offences under the category of “Other dishonesty”. Some specific money laundering charges can also be reported under the category of “Other crimes against society”. Should specific details be required on these offences they can be requested through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.
