Information requested
I’m emailing you regarding my concerns about the above roundabout, especially east bound/north bound (depending on your view).
I’m in sales and drive the whole of the UK literally plus Ireland so have a reasonable experience of roundabouts in different locations/road types etc etc with many layouts. BUT I’ve never come across the situation where you have a large roadside sign indicating that BOTH lanes are for traffic continuing straight over and along the A90 but when you are almost on the roundabout you have a choice - stay in that right lane and turn right or cut across lanes just before the roundabout (with the inherent risks). When the roundabout previously had no lights then everyone almost came to a halt but now that there are lights traffic it is much quicker when green. This means it’s difficult to swap lanes. Remember that these people are not in the wrong lane if they pay attention to the big sign but once on the roundabout they realise that, despite the earlier sign, the right lane isn’t really for going straight on at all. Fortunately the ‘locals’ realise the signage is confusing so stick to the left lane only for straight on but this leads to long tailbacks. There have been NUMEROUS accidents, fortunately none fatal but nonetheless inconvenient, expensive and upsetting for drivers. Something really needs to be done to sort this mess out.
Also, can I request details of reported/known accidents since the upgrade vs the same period last year please.
Response
With regards to your query on the signage I can confirm that the signage will be addressed as part of the post-construction review observations, including those made by road users regarding road markings and signs, are being reviewed and considered by the developer and the Road Authorities.
Any changes from the original design is a complex process involving consultation with a range of parties to identify the most effective solution, which will be progressed as quickly as possible.
Adjustments have already been made to the traffic light sequencing and initial monitoring has shown a reduction in journey times on the A90 eastbound approach to the junction.
Journey time monitoring will continue, and further adjustments will be made as necessary to optimise the signal phasing.
Supported by Amey, the Operating Company for the North East Trunk Road network, Transport Scotland are working with all parties, including Springfield, their design consultant and Dundee City Council to ensure that any changes at Swallow Roundabout identified in the safety audit or reported by members of the public are fully considered.
The records we hold relate to collisions where someone is injured or killed, and which become known to Police Scotland. Therefore, we do not hold records relating to damage-only collisions.
Please note that any figures for 2024 and 2025 are provisional as they are based on monthly returns received thus far from Police Scotland, with the most recent returns being received on 11th July 2025. This may be an incomplete picture of casualties up to that date due to a slight lag between collisions occurring and records being processed and shared by Police Scotland. These figures are also subject to change due to subsequent corrections and late records.
Please see Annex A for information on personal injury collisions on the A90 Swallow Roundabout in 2024 and 2025. The signals at Swallow Roundabout became operational on 5 March 2025. For clarity, the one personal injury accident recorded within the data in Annex A occurred on 5 April 2025.
Please also note that temporary traffic management, with reduced speed limits, were in place for the main works between 22 April 2024 and continued until 9 May 2025 (excluding preparatory and remedial works).
