Response
How many such signs exist in Scotland?
There are 313 operational variable message signs (VMS) on the trunk road network.
Please provide a list of roads locations on which these signs are present and how many signs per road?
Please see Annex A to this response for details of all road locations.
What is the average cost of installation per unit?
While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance Transport Scotland does not have the information you have requested. This is because we do not hold and average installation cost due to many variables involved with each installation.
Over the past 5 years 2019-20 to 2024-25(to date) how much per year do the signs cost to run?
While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance Transport Scotland does not have the information you have requested. This is because we do not hold individual energy supply costs for the the LED VMS signs. These costs for these are included within the energy costs for the wider Traffic Scotland roadside equipment estate and we are unable to separate the costs for LED VMS individually.
Over the past 5 years 2019-20 to 2024-25(to date) how many repairs have been required to signs?
While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance Transport Scotland does not have the information you have requested. The fault information available on the Traffic Scotland Fault Management System is only retained back to January 2021. From January 2021 to date, the amount of fault repairs is 1,419. The fault information is contained within Annex A.
Over the past 5 years 2019-20 to 2024-25(to date) how much has been spent in repairs and maintenance of signs?
While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance Transport Scotland does not have the information you have requested. The LED VMS signs are maintained by our Traffic Scotland Infrastructure Contractor. The cost for the maintenance and fault repair of these LED Signs are included within the contractors Lump Sum activities which include all Traffic Scotland Roadside equipment.
What are all the messages that are available to be shown on the signs?
While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance Transport Scotland does not have the information you have requested. Dependant on the age, size and technology of the individual sign, the LED message signs have varying capabilities and can be used to display free text messages and pictograms as required to deliver tactical and strategical travel information as well as safety messages when required.
