R100 broadband project: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

How complete is the R100 broadband project, i.e. how many homes are connected and how many homes are not connected? Could you supply what areas these homes are in?

Response

The Reaching 100% (R100) programme, which comprises of three strands of activity – the R100 contracts, the R100 Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (R100 SBVS) and continued expansion of commercial coverage - ensures that every home and business across Scotland has a means of accessing superfast broadband services.

For the purposes of this response, we have interpreted your question as primarily relating to delivery of the R100 contracts and how many premises remain to be delivered.

The following table sets out the total number of premises currently contracted to receive connections through the R100 contracts by 2028, the number of premises connected as of 12 February 2025, and the number of premises yet to be connected as of the same date. Additionally, it also includes the total number of premises delivered by the R100 Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS), as of 17 February 2025.

Openreach are also delivering a number of additional connections to premises that were not in the contracts, but have been connected as a result of nearby R100 contract investment and build. This is known as overspill. The number of such connections delivered through this mechanism are also provided in the following table.

The R100 contracts continue to deliver full fibre, gigabit capable connections across Scotland. Build is being delivered in phases that have been designed to maximise efficiency and support wider network configuration. Our R100 SBVS also remains available to eligible premises not expected to benefit from R100 contract or commercial build, offering a voucher worth up to £5,000 with which to secure, as a minimum, a superfast broadband connection. As a demand-led scheme, it is not possible to provide the number of properties remaining to be connected through utilisation of vouchers.

Our online checker at https://gov.scot/digitalconnectivity remains the best way to track the most up-to- date connectivity status for individual premises, including the most recent plans and indicative timescales for R100 contract build, as well as eligibility for the R100 SBVS.

Information relating to the rollout of the Scottish Government's R100 contracts, including latest coverage figures, is available on our website at Data insights | Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband. Data is categorised by contract area (Central, North and South), Local Authority and Scottish Parliamentary Constituency.
