Statistics of drivers aged 80+ involved in road traffic collisions: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

Figures on the number of road traffic collisions involving drivers who are 80 plus. I note that official figures show the number of drivers who are 65 plus (see attached figures).

Can you provide details for the number of drivers there are aged 80 plus in Scotland?

Can you provide details of their gender?

Can the figures be broken down by year? (including 2024 if possible)

Can you provide details of the number of collisions the people in this age category have been involved in and break them down into categories of how serious they are (as done in the table attacked)?

Response

The records we hold relate to collisions where someone is injured or killed, and which become known to Police Scotland.

The attached file provides an updated version of the table you provided to include drivers aged 80 plus. I would note that this only relates to drivers of cars, so I have also included a table showing the number of collisions involving drivers of all types of vehicles aged 80+ by severity.

As far as providing figures for the number of Scottish drivers aged 80 plus and a breakdown by gender, Transport Scotland does not hold this information. The Department for Transport publish a range of driving licence data from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and it is possible that they may hold the information that you have requested. They can be contacted via: foi-advice-teamdft@dft.gov.uk.
