Money spent on ChatGPT and Other AI programmes: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

  1. The total amount of money spent on ChatGPT.
  2. A list of any other AI programmes or services that the Scottish Government – and any of its departments, directorates etc – use. Tell me what the programme is used for and how much is paid for it.

Response

The answer to your question is

1. A total of £154.45 had been spent on ChatGPT subscriptions (up to end Jan 2024). This was split across three individual teams.

2. We have recently (November 2023) responded to an organisation wide FOI question around Scottish Government use of AI so I have not repeated that ask however I have asked those making use of AI in that previous FOI to share with me any related costs, this has allowed me to manage your ask within the upper cost limit. I have attached a spreadsheet which details those costs where a cost exists.

It is worth noting that in some instances it has not been possible to extricate the costs specifically relating only the AI element of a service as these make up part of a larger product or project cost.

There are also a number of AI use cases which are delivered entirely by internal team resources, therefore with no additional cost.

A number are also delivered via free versions of AI tools and again therefore result in no cost.
