Car ownership per household: FOI release

Information requested

• The average number of cars per household for Scotland, if available for council areas including Glasgow City, City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Pert & Kinross and Angus (for periods 2019, 2020 and 2021)
• The average car mileage / km in Scotland - if available for council areas including Glasgow City, City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Pert & Kinross and Angus (for periods 2019, 2020 and 2021)
• The average CO2 emissions per car per mile or km in Scotland (for periods 2019, 2020 and 2021)

Response

I attach a copy of spreadsheet with the results of Scottish Household Survey of the information you requested in point 1, with highlighted councils that were requested. We have not published data for 2021 yet, this will be available towards the start of next year.

We do not hold data for the average car mileage in Scotland and per local authority as you asked in point 2. We only hold data regarding total traffic volume per local authority and for Scotland. This is published in Chapter 5, table 5.4 of Scottish Transport Statistics that can be accessed here Chapter 05 - Road Traffic | Transport Scotland. The Department for Transport also publishes road traffic estimates by local authority – that can be accessed here Road traffic statistics (TRA) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

The data for the average CO2 g/km emissions per car in Scotland can be found in table 13.6b of Scottish Transport Statistics under Avg CO2 and can be accessed here Chapter 13 - Environment | Transport Scotland.
