Staff guidance regarding social media accounts and email signatures use of pronouns: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

1. Can the Scottish Government confirm they have issued staff guidance over the use of pronouns in social media profiles/email signatures?

2. If the answer to question one is yes, can the Scottish Government provide the guidance issued to staff?

Response

The Scottish Government has not issued guidance to employees on the use of pronouns in social media profiles/email signatures.

One of our Agencies, Social Security Scotland, has issued internal guidance on the application of its standard email signature to its own staff. The Social Security Scotland email signature guidance is attached.

The Scottish Government is committed to advancing LGBTI equality. We encourage any action that makes people feel included and respected in our organisation and it is an individual’s choice whether to include their pronouns in email signatures.
