Scottish Crime Recording Board information regarding recording of sex and gender: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

Copies of all Scottish Crime Recording Board minutes, notes, correspondence, or other documentation in relation to the recording of sex and gender within crime statistics.

Response

The purpose and objectives of the Scottish Crime Recording Board relate to the Recorded Crime National Statistics. The data we receive from Police Scotland for the production of these statistics is a simple count of the number of crimes and offences, for each local authority, which the police have recorded. With the exception of a number of Sexual crimes and crimes under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018 (where the codes used to categorise the crimes indicate gender of the victim), the data do not include any information on the demographics of either victim or perpetrator.

At the Scottish Crime Recording Board held on the 4th December 2019, the recording of sex and gender within crime statistics was on the agenda, this was a verbal update regarding the work of the Sex and Gender in Data Working Group, from the Police Scotland representative on this group. There was verbal agreement from the board that this would be discussed further once the final guidance from the working group was published. There are two documents which mention sex and gender in crime statistics, the agenda from this meeting (Document 1) and some correspondence circulated after the meeting which discusses the actions (Document 2).

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance we are unable to provide some of the information you have requested because an exemption under section s.38(1)(b) (personal information) of FOISA applies to that information. The following information has been redacted from Document 2: personal information and information which does not fall into the scope of this request.

Document 1:

Some of the information you have requested is available on the Scottish Government website (SCRB meeting: 4 December, 2019). Under section 25(1) of FOISA, we do not have to give you information which is already reasonably accessible to you.
