NHS Highland shareholdings in certain companies: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

Can you tell me please if NHS Highland has shareholdings in companies such as BAE systems, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman.

Response

NHS Highland employees are eligible for membership of the NHS Superannuation and Pension Schemes (Scotland), which are unfunded (also known as 'pay as you go') statutory public service schemes. Contributions from active members are used to pay pensions in payment, with any shortfall being met by Government. As such, no money is set aside and invested to meet future pension liabilities in the same way as a funded scheme operates, and there is therefore no investment portfolio or shareholdings in private companies.
