Date responded: 23 January 2019

Information requested

1.  Information for the last 5 years for any Scottish Government employees who have received more than 10 days paid special leave in any given leave year.

2.  In relation to question 1, if there are employees who have received more than 10 days special leave, please indicate the total days of paid special leave given in each case.

3.  In relation to question 2, please briefly give reasons for special leave that has been given.

Response

Special Leave (paid or unpaid) may be granted to support staff dealing with unexpected personal circumstances such as the illness of a dependant, bereavement or a domestic emergency. Special leave can also be granted to enable staff to undertake reserve forces training or public duties such as membership of children’s panels.

A copy of the Scottish Government’s special leave guidance is attached.

Situations where paid special leave is granted can vary in nature and complexity, and more than one event may arise in a short period of time.  The tables at the Annex show the number of staff in Core Directorates who have received more than 10 days paid special leave and the reasons for these.
