Information requested
1. How many motorways are there in the UK?
2. How many UK motorways are currently undergoing road maintenance work?
3. How many road maintenance projects are underway on UK motorways this year (2018 to date), compared to last year (2017) and the year before (2016)?
4. How long do road maintenance projects on motorways last on average?
5. Where is the longest stretch of roadworks in the UK currently?"
It was subsequently clarified that the request only related to Scotland and that information about maintenance schemes only (as distinct from capital investment schemes aimed at upgrading existing infrastructure) where these have resulted in continuous road or lane closures (including any hard shoulder closures) with a duration of more than seven days.

2. Transport Scotland is responsible for the ongoing maintenance work across its whole network of trunk roads, bridges and other structures. Our Operating Companies, as part of the 4th Generation Term Contract for Management and Maintenance of the Scottish Trunk Road Network are working continually on the maintenance of all roads across the network. All motorways are under continual maintenance.

3. The table below summarises the number of road maintenance projects that were undertaken each year between 2016 and 2018, where the works required the closure of one or more lanes for longer than seven days.

4. The average duration for all projects refered to in response to question 3 was 14 days.
