Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

FOI reference: FOI/18/00423
Date received: 12 February 2018
Date responded: 13 February 2018

Information requested

Any Scottish Government analysis of the impact of a Universal Basic Income on inflation, particularly house prices in Scotland.

Response

The Scottish Government has not undertaken any analysis of the impact of Universal Basic Income on inflation.

As you may already be aware the Scottish Government has committed £250,000 of funding for four Local Authority pilot areas to conduct feasibility studies and develop Basic Income pilots.

This funding will be available to cover a two year period from April 2018 and will help establish a Scottish evidence base, exploring how a Basic Income could be delivered and what the costs and benefits may be.

Pilot authorities will be supported by government analysts who will use the tax and benefit models held within the government to help pilots assess the cost and feasibility of their plans.
