Fishing closures: Firth of Clyde - 2022 and 2023

Areas of the Firth of Clyde closed for all fishing between 14 February and 30 April in 2022 and 2023, to protect cod during their spawning season.

Areas of the Firth of Clyde will close to all fishing activity between 14 February and 30 April in 2022 and 2023. This is to protect cod during their spawning season.

This is a change from the previous situation that included exemptions to allow nephrops trawlers, creelers and scallop dredgers to continue to fish in the area. We have taken the decision to close the area to all fishing in 2022 and 2023 because the cod stock has shown little sign of recovery despite the ongoing seasonal closure.

You can get more information in the attached PDF document, including maps and the rationale behind our decision.

The spawning cod closures are implemented through the Sea Fish (Prohibition on Fishing) (Firth of Clyde) (No. 2) Order 2022 Scottish statutory instrument.

We will continue to engage with the fishing industry, along with any other affected stakeholders, going forward.
