Citizens Summary 2019: European Regional Development Fund

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion by correcting imbalances between regions.

ERDF is one half of the European Structural and Investment Funds. On behalf of the European Commission, the Scottish Government has allocated approximately £326m to local authorities and national agencies to distribute the funding.

What the ERDF does

The ERDF is being used in Scotland to:

  • provide finance and dedicated support to SMEs
  • commit funding to cutting-edge technologies
  • tackle the crimate crisis

For example, thanks to ERDF support, in September 2019 the Scottish Government announced the £30m Scottish Low Carbon Heat Funding scheme. It provides financial assistance for up to 50% of the total eligible costs of projects that heat buildings using innovative and low carbon methods. It also supports industrial projects focused on reducing emissions.
