The Organisational Duty of Candour is a statutory (legal) duty on Scottish organisations providing health and social care to be open and honest when something goes wrong that is not related to the course of the condition for which the person is receiving care.

This information leaflet provides information about when the Duty of Candour procedure should be activated, what the person should expect and what happens during the procedure. Information is also provided for contacts of further support within organisations.

Organisational Duty of Candour in Scotland – What it means to you

When the Duty of Candour procedure is being followed, this leaflet can be given to the patient, service user or person acting on their acting on their behalf. It explains what to expect from the process and aims to help them understand what will happen during the duty of candour procedure. Information is also provided for contacts of further support within organisations.

Printing services

Duty of candour resources have been developed that are available to order via NHS Health Scotland’s Web2Print tool print.healthscotland.com. You will find the products in the Scottish Government folder within the Open Catalogue. Prices for printed copies start at £25 + delivery. 

If you have not registered for Web2Print, please send your name, job title, organisation, address and a contact number to nhs.healthscotland-web2print@nhs.net and you will be given access to this tool and the materials.

These products allow for your logo to be placed on them as an option. You can you send your organisations hi-res logo file to nhs.healthscotland-web2print@nhs.net and it will be uploaded as optional for the materials.
