Offshore wind energy - draft updated Sectoral Marine Plan: sustainability appraisal

The purpose of the sustainability appraisal report is to summarise the potential social, economic and environmental impacts, and suggested mitigation measures, of the implementation of the draft updated Sectoral Marine Plan for offshore wind energy.

Overview

The Sustainability Appraisal (SA) Report summarises the key outcomes of the individual detailed reports (Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), Social and Economic Impact Assessment (SEIA), Habitats Regulations Appraisal Appropriate Assessment Information Report (HRA AAIR), and Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area (NCMPA) Assessment) that contributed to the assessment of the Draft Plan to achieve sustainable development objectives. Regional Locational Guidance (RLG) has also been developed, reported separately, which provides the current (baseline) for the topics covered in the above-mentioned assessments.

The SA consolidates the key outcomes of the assessments of the Draft Plan to achieve sustainable development objectives. It outlines the approach taken by each assessment process and highlights the key impacts (positive and negative) of the Draft Plan on environmental, social and economic receptors. It also sets out proposed plan and project level mitigation

The SA aims to capture the complex social, environmental, and economic considerations in plan-making to achieve more sustainable developments. Given the increasing demand for the use of marine resources, the SA supports the effective management of the marine environment.
