List of community-led projects that have been awarded with Climate Challenge Fund grants for 2020 to 2022.


The Climate Challenge Fund supports communities across Scotland to take action on climate change.

The following projects have recevied funding for 2020 to 2022.

Angus

Project: Sustainable Kirriemuir's Nourish Kirriemuir project
Activity: w
ill offer free support to help the community to grow and share local, seasonal food and cut food waste. The project will also facilitate discussion about climate change by making and sharing a series of micro-documentaries, following individuals trying to make a difference in the town.

Argyll & Bute

Project: Argyll & the Isles Coast & Countryside Trust's EcoMAKI project
Activity:
will offer free support to help the Mid-Argyll community to adopt strategies to tackle climate change in the areas of food and travel.  The project will run a series of low-carbon workshops around the themes of local food, sustainable cookery, bike repair and tool upcycling with links made between the theme of each workshop and climate change. The project will also establish a car-sharing scheme and make refurbished bikes available to borrow.

City of Edinburgh

Project: The Low Carbon Communities Initiative will be run by the Networking Key Services (NKS)
Activity: will
offer free support to help South Asian communities in Edinburgh to reduce carbon emissions in the areas of food, travel, waste and energy. Project activities will include the creation of new community growing spaces, training to improve levels of cycling and fuel-efficient driving, and a variety of workshops to tackle waste. Home energy efficiency advice will help to reduce home energy use and tackle fuel poverty. The project will offer free Carbon Literacy training.

Project: The Welcoming Association's Welcoming a Greener Future project
Activty:
will help migrant and refugee communities to reduce carbon emissions in the areas of energy, food and waste. Home energy advice will help to reduce energy use, carbon emissions and fuel poverty with further activities including food sharing, food growing and swap shops. The project will also raise awareness about environmental issues and ensure that tackling climate change is seen as a key aspect of building new lives in Scotland

Project: Edinburgh and Lothians Regional Equality Council's Communities for Conservation project
Activity: will offer free support to help ethnic minority communities to become more energy efficient at home, cycle for commuting, embrace a zero- waste lifestyle and grow food. The project will include home energy and zero waste advice, cycling activities, fuel efficient driver training courses and swap shop events. Further activities will increase understanding of climate change in the local community through a variety of events, workshops and film screenings

Project: SHRUB Co-operative's Swapping Normal project
Activity:
will offer free support to help Edinburgh residents to rethink their relationship with waste. The project will run a Swapshop in their Zero Waste Hub, plus repair and information events and reuse collections. The project will provide people with an accessible way to change their consumption habits to be more climate conscious.

Project: The Go Green project will be run by Edinburgh College Students’ Association
Activity: will offer free support to help Edinburgh College students to travel more sustainably and reduce their food and textile waste. Project activities will include cycle training and bike maintenance workshops, a liftshare scheme, a Community Fridge at each campus and swap events. The project will increase understanding of climate change by running workshops in class time and providing opportunities to develop sustainability skills through extracurricular and voluntary activities.

Project: The Broomhouse Centre's Broomhouse Home Farm project
Activity:
will offer free support to help residents in Broomhouse, Parkhead and Sighthill to reduce the carbon emissions associated with food. Project activities will include the creation of new food growing spaces, support on food growing and sustainable cooking, plus a variety of community food events. The project will also help to raise awareness of food miles and the links between food choices and climate change.

Project: Pilton Retreat's On Our Way project will offer free support to help young people to decrease reliance on car travel to school and choose local food. Project activities will include cycle training and route planning advice, plus opportunities to engage with active travel developments planned for Pennywell Road. Further activities will include food growing, cycling and fun-based environmental workshops at Pilton Retreat. £60,770.

Dundee City

Project: Gate Church International's Gate Church Carbon Saving Project
Activity:
will offer free support to help communities in Dundee to transition to low carbon lifestyles through initiatives such as Dundee’s West End Community Fridge, Give Boxes, Clothes Swaps and Repair Cafés - all while helping people in need. The project will facilitate discussion about climate change by bringing communities together around these common interests and will increase understanding of climate change through workshops accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project

Project: Sustaining Dunbar's Fixing for a Future project
Activity:
will offer free support to East Linton and Dunbar to deliver Repair Cafés, Skills Workshops covering joinery, clothes and bicycle repair, and Carbon Conversation Facilitator Training. The project will increase understanding of climate change in the local community as facilitators will conduct Carbon Conversations with groups, teach sustainable living at home and bring participants together to make changes at a community level.

Project: North Light Arts' Rebellious Threads project
Activity:
will offer free support to help young people and the community of Dunbar to cut textile waste.  A wide range of upcycling workshops, events and online sales will help extend the life of garments. The project will increase understanding of climate change in the local community through a vibrant media campaign to highlight the links between textile waste and climate change, as well as practical measures to help address this. East Renfrewshire

Project: Barrhead’s Climate Challenge Project
Activity:
will be run by Barrhead Housing Association to help the community of Barrhead to reduce food and textile waste. The project will distribute surplus food in the community and offer free workshops covering cookery and repair of clothing and furniture. The project will also deliver climate change themed events and link project activities to climate impacts.

Project: Woodfarm Education Centre's Green Guardians Climate Challenge project
Activity:
will offer free support to help the BAME community in East Renfrewshire to reduce carbon emissions in the areas of food, travel and waste. Project activities will include food growing, sustainable cookery workshops, cycle training and walking groups, plus a tool library and sewing club. The project will also provide volunteering opportunities for climate advocates.

Falkirk

Project: Central Scotland Regional Equality Council's One Planet Communities project
Activity: will offer free support to help people from the Forth Valley to tackle waste and understand more about how purchasing decisions impact on climate change. Project activities will include swap shops, furniture and clothing upcycling workshops, sewing lessons, a Community Fridge, plus an online local sustainable consumerism hub. The project will improve understanding of climate change through conversation sessions centred on fashion and waste and the provision of information at a variety of events.

Project: Forth Environment Link's Climate Kitchen Garden project
Activity: will have a communal, social approach to learning that will set climate change on the menu with growing, cooking, eating and reducing food waste. Forth Environment Link aim to help each project participant to improve their Climate Literacy within the context of their wider environmental and social beliefs. The ambition is to see Falkirk emerge as a Climate Friendly Community with access to consistent and meaningful information on taking climate action through food choices.

Fife

Project: Greener Kirkcaldy's Let’s move up a gear! project
Activity:
will offer support to help people in Kirkcaldy reduce their car use and save bikes from landfill. Project activities will include cycle training, led rides and a cycling festival, plus the repairing and upcycling of bikes. The project will facilitate discussion about climate change through a network of Climate Champions and a programme of climate change awareness activities. Greener Kirkcaldy will be become Carbon Literacy accredited and produce a Local Guide to Low Carbon Living

Project: Tayport GROWS
Activity:
will be run by Tayport Community Trust through its gardening sub-group PLANT, and will help the community of Tayport to develop greater awareness of the impact of food choices on climate change and to take positive action. The project will offer free support to grow and cook local food. The project will increase awareness and understanding of climate change through Carbon Conversation groups and information stalls, with further initiatives involving multimedia storytelling and activities for children.

Glasgow City

Project: Bike for Good's VeloCommunities project
Activity: will offer free support to help people in west and south Glasgow to become less reliant on carbon emitting modes of travel and enable them to cycle for short local journeys. Project activities will include free access to cycle training, increased access to bikes, route planning rides, bike maintenance training and more. The project will highlight the links between transport choices and the climate emergency and facilitate climate discussion through film nights, speaker events and car-free days.

Project: West of Scotland Regional Equality Council's Cook, Grow, Sew – Branching Out project
Activity: will offer free support to help minority ethnic communities in Glasgow, Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire to reduce their carbon emissions, tackle fuel poverty and increase climate awareness. The project will offer home energy efficiency advice, develop new community food growing space and provide workshops on zero waste cooking and furniture upcycling.  The project will also build the capacity of young people and volunteers to develop and share Carbon Literacy knowledge.

Project: Tron St Mary’s Parish Church's Saving, Sewing, Sharing and Growing project
Activity: will offer free support to help people in and around Balornock and Barmulloch in Glasgow to reduce their carbon footprint in the areas of food and textiles. The project will support the growing of vegetables in school grounds and home gardens, as well as the re-distribution of surplus food from local shops and a variety of activities to help people to repair clothing and textiles. Further activities will help people to increase their awareness and knowledge of climate change.

Project: Woodlands Community Development Trust's Woodlands Climate Action project
Activity: will offer free support to help the people of the Woodlands area of Glasgow to reduce their carbon emissions in relation to food, transport and waste. Project activities will include sustainable cookery classes, cycle training and repair workshops, swap shops and community bike rides. The project will facilitate discussion about climate change by running Climate Conversation cafes and a range of social events and film screenings.

Project: Govanhill Baths Community Trust's Rags to Riches UpHub
Activity: will offer free support to help Govanhill and surrounding communities to improve waste management and increase recycling rates of plastics, textiles and wood. The project will engage schools, community groups and local businesses in workshops on waste reduction, sorting, collection and upcycling. The project will increase understanding of climate change in the local community through education programmes on the environmental impacts of waste and the benefits of a circular economy.

Project: Milnbank Housing Association's Glasgow Inner East End Shift Initiative
Activity: will offer free support to help the residents of the Inner East End to continue to change their lifestyles in favour of more sustainable modes of transport and locally grown food. The project will establish a walking group and provide bikes, scooters and training to help people to shift away from car travel. The project will also create new food growing spaces and provide support to help people adopt more climate friendly diets.

Project: The YCSA, Mending Our Planet project
Activity: will be run by Youth Community Support Agency to help Glasgow’s young Black and Minority Ethnic community become active on tackling climate change in the areas of energy, travel, food and waste. Project activities will include home energy efficiency advice, creation of walking and cycling groups, sustainable cookery workshops and repair and upcycling sessions. Young people will have the opportunity to become Climate Change Ambassadors.

Project: Kinning Park Complex's Brighter, Warmer, Greener project
Activity: will make their building more energy efficient through the installation of insulation, LED lighting and double-glazed sky lights. The project will also collect surplus food for use in its community cafe and run a variety of repair, upcycling and low carbon cooking workshops. Additional initiatives will include climate change film screenings and discussion sessions.

Project: The Low Carbon Community project
Activity:
will be run by Empower Women for Change to help ethnic minority women in the south-west of Glasgow to reduce carbon emissions associated with travel and household textile waste. Free project activities will include a women's cycling club, eco-driving training, household textiles waste upcycling and a swap shop. The project will also offer workshops to help volunteers and the local community to increase their knowledge of climate change.

Project: Ahl Al Bait Society's Love Life Waste Less project
Activity:
will offer free support to help the Middle Eastern Community of Glasgow to reduce carbon emissions in the areas of energy, waste and food. Project activities will include home energy advice visits to help improve household energy efficiency and tackle fuel poverty. Further initiatives will focus on repair and upcycling, food growing, food waste and sustainable cookery. The project will also offer interactive climate change educational workshops and climate leadership training.

Project: eRide project
Activity: will be run by SoulRiders Scotland to help the local ethnic minority community in Glasgow to become less reliant on cars by using e-Cargo Bikes to transport their weekly shopping, general items and to do the school run.  The project will offer free e-bike taster sessions, training and maintenance.  The project will also run a series of Climate Conversations and organise a major cycling and climate change festival.

Highland

Project: Appleseed: Grow Your Future! project
Activity: will be run by Applecross Community Company to help the Applecross community reduce carbon emissions through establishing a community growing space and composting facilities. The project will offer free workshops on growing, cooking and composting locally. The project will also raise knowledge of climate change and facilitate discussion through a series of events, workshops, conversations and e-leaflets.

Project: MOO Food's Scran Not Scraps project
Activity: will offer free support to help Muir of Ord reduce food waste. The project aims to inspire, enable and motivate the community to make healthy, zero waste food choices. Project activities will include a ZeroWaste Kitchen Challenge and workshops covering sustainable cooking, food preservation, food growing, composting and wormeries. The project will facilitate a deeper understanding about climate change by bringing the topic into the context of daily food choices.

Project: Arisaig Community Trust's Arisaig Eco Project
Activity: will offer free support to help the community move towards more sustainable lifestyles with a focus on reducing waste and car travel. The project will run a clothing swap shop, develop a tool re-use scheme and offer a variety of initiatives such as cycle training and e-bike trials. Carbon Literacy for Communities training, campaigns, workshops and events will help to increase understanding of climate change.

Proejct: Lairg & District Learning Centre's Seasons of Change project
Activity: will offer free training to help Sutherland and Ross-shire reduce waste and increase levels of local food growing and cooking.  Project activities will include a community tool library and workshops to repair and upcycle wood and textiles saved from landfill, in addition to sessions covering cooking and growing seasonal produce. The project will facilitate discussion about climate change by embedding climate conversations in all classes, events and social media.

Project: The Freedom Veg project, The Libertie Project
Activity:
will offer free support to help Crown Inverness residents and people with convictions to grow their own food, share surplus supermarket food, learn low carbon recipes and volunteer in an Urban Community Edible Garden. Project activities will include the creation of a demonstration food growing area, workshops covering food growing and low carbon cookery, a Community Fridge and the production of food growing kits and a low carbon cookbook.

Project: Lochaber Environmental Group's Low Carbon Lochaber project
Activity: will offer free support to help Lochaber residents to meet the challenges of the climate and ecological emergency by reducing their carbon footprint in the areas of home energy, travel and food. Project activities will include home energy efficiency advice, bike skills workshops, test drives of electric vehicles and the creation of a local food group. The project will also run Carbon Literacy training days and offer information on climate change at school visits and a variety of local events.

Inverclyde

Project: Branchton Community Centre Association's Our Footprints, Our Future project
Activity: will offer free support to help people and communities across Greenock South West to reduce carbon emissions in the areas of food, travel and waste. Project activities will include new community food growing space at Branchton Community Centre, community cycle events, clothes swaps and workshops teaching textile and furniture repair. A visual carbon footprint will be produced for each community, allowing people to see the impact of their changing behaviour.

Proejct: RIG Arts' Fixing Fashion project
Activity: will offer free support to help people in Inverclyde to make sustainable shopping choices and learn how to repair and upcycle clothes. Workshops will cover shopping choices, textile waste, sewing, upcycling and repair skills, plus best routes for recycling. The project will increase awareness of the environmental impact of the fashion and textile industry through public art installations, social media campaigns and a spectacular sustainable fashion show.

Midlothian

Project: Penicuik Community Alliance's Penicuik Community Climate Action Challenge project
Activity: will offer free support to help residents and groups to reduce their carbon footprints by tackling waste. The project will run a Community Fridge and refillery, plus fix-it sessions and youth activities. Further initiatives will offer residents the chance to take part in Climate Conversations and to get personal climate action plans.

Moray

Project: Grow Elgin project
Activity:
will be run by REAP with the Elgin community and will offer free support to help people reduce carbon emissions by growing and cooking more local food, wasting less and composting. Project activities will include new community food growing spaces, sustainable cooking sessions and composting classes. The project will also facilitate discussions about climate change through workshops, Carbon Conversations and fun, friendly sessions and events for all ages.

Orkney Islands

Project: Papay Development Trust's Papay Growing Project
Activity: will offer free support to help Papa Westray to install a new Polycrub, windbreak fencing and equipment to increase the food growing capacity of the community market garden. The project will generate further interest in local and low carbon food choices and highlight lifestyle changes that can help to reduce the impact of climate change on coastal communities like Papay.

Perth & Kinross

Project: The Training for a Sustainable Carbon Saving Community project
Activity:
will be run by Forward Coupar Angus and will offer free support to help Coupar Angus and the surrounding area to combine increases in Climate Literacy with a shift towards carbon-saving behaviours. Climate Literacy training will be made widely available to individuals, interest groups and young people. Further project activities will include the establishment of a Low Carbon Centre in the town, a sustainable market garden and promotion of active travel amongst children and commuters.

Scottish Borders

Project: Selkirk Regeneration Company's Sustainable Selkirk project
Activity:
will offer free home energy advice to help residents of Selkirk and the surrounding area to reduce their energy use and carbon emissions. Specialist support will be highlighted to help tackle fuel poverty with workshops and information events to promote low-carbon travel alternatives and increase knowledge of climate change.

Project: The Road to Carbon Reduction project
Activity: will run by Peebles CAN to offer free support to help Peebles and surrounding towns to reduce carbon emissions through practical activities involving travel and food, plus Carbon Literacy education. Project activities will include cycle training and maintenance sessions, fuel efficient driver training and a host of food growing support. The project will also host informal Skill Share events to help people to learn about Carbon Literacy in a comfortable way.

Shetland Islands

Project: The Warmer Greener Homes for Shetland project
Activity: will be run by Shetland Islands Citizens Advice Bureau to help Shetlanders to tackle fuel poverty and the climate crisis. The project will offer free advice on improving home energy efficiency and highlight opportunities for installing renewables. The project will also train members of the community to become Community Climate Champions who will share their knowledge and encourage others to join them in adopting a low carbon lifestyle.

South Lanarkshire

Project: Moncreiff Parish Church's Moncreiff Energy Efficiency Project
Activity: will provide free support to help the local community make their homes more energy efficient to reduce energy use, carbon emissions and fuel poverty. The project will include energy efficiency improvements to the Church Halls and initiatives to help people make informed choices to tackle waste. Further events and activities will increase understanding of climate change.

Project: The R:5 project
Activity: will be run by Lightburn Elderly Association Project to offer free support to help people across South Lanarkshire to prolong the life of their clothing, shoes and accessories and reduce textile consumption and waste. The project will also increase knowledge of climate change by offering Carbon Literacy training to all its volunteers who will share this information with customers.

Project: Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust's Sustaining CamGlen project
Activity: will be run in partnership with Growing Together to help residents of Cambuslang and Rutherglen to reduce carbon emissions in the areas of food, travel and waste. The project will establish an outdoor covered learning centre where people can learn how to grow food and forage. The project will also run an outdoor environmental film festival and host a two-year programme of knowledge sharing and skill-building activities. Award: £117,803.

Project: The Clydesdale Climate Action project
Activity: will be run by the local community, supported by Clydesdale Community Initiatives, and will offer free support to help residents of Clydesdale to reduce carbon footprints in the areas of waste and food. Project activities will include a tool library, a furniture recycling service and the formation of a network of food growers. The project will also offer a package of opportunities to learn more about climate change.

Stirling

Project: Transition Stirling's Share and Repair project
Activity: will offer free support to help the people of Stirling to borrow and repair items instead of buying new. Project activities will include a tool library and workshops covering upcycling and repair of furniture and textiles, plus sessions on sustainable food.  A variety of film screenings will help to generate discussion about climate change.

West Dunbartonshire

Project: Isaro Social Integration Network's Climate Action Community Hub
Activity:
will offer free support to help ethnic minorities in West Dunbartonshire and beyond to improve their Climate Literacy and reduce carbon emissions associated with home energy use, food, travel and textile waste. Project initiatives will include advice on home energy efficiency and sustainable diets, cycle training and a swap shop. The project will run Green Champions leadership training for secondary school children, with primary school children offered the chance to contribute to the production of an environmentally themed comic book.

Project: Clydebank Housing Association's Growing Change for Good project
Activity:
will offer free support to help Clydebank residents to tackle carbon emissions across themes including food, travel and energy. The project will provide opportunities for people to grow their own produce and learn how to cook sustainably with further initiatives including cycle training and bike maintenance classes. The project will also include work with local schools to increase knowledge about climate change and its links with home energy use, food and travel.
