Canadian Prime Minister: Letter to Justin Trudeau

Letter from First Minister John Swinney to Justin Trudeau after he stepped down as Prime Minister of Canada.

To: Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

From: First Minister John Swinney

On your departure as Prime Minister of Canada, I congratulate you on your service over the course of more than nine years, for the leadership you have shown in representing the interests of Canada’s people, and more recently Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine and its people.

Scotland and Canada enjoy an historic bond and close friendship. I would like to thank you for all that you have done to keep warm those bonds. As you noted in your speech to the University of Edinburgh in 2017, “the relationship that our two nations maintain is special, based on a common past and culture”. That relationship has only deepened in the years since.

I am sure that in your grandfather’s home village of Grange, Banffshire, they will raise a glass to you and I join them in wishing you and your family warm Scottish wishes for your next chapter.

To meet the challenges of the future, it is important that international partners continue to work together. With that goal in mind, and to continue the friendship between our two countries, Scotland remains committed to working with Canada.
