Scottish Health Survey 2017

Steady decline in the number of children at risk of obesity

Minster for Public Health, Joe FitzPatrick said:

"Giving children the best possible start in life is one of this Government's key priorities which is why, during the Year of Young People, we have pledged to halve childhood obesity by 2030.

"It is encouraging that the 2017 Scottish Health Survey shows a steady decline in the number of children at risk of obesity, as well as an increase in the number of portions of fruit and vegetables eaten by children each day.

"Diet and activity go together and the survey also shows that almost 70% of children had participated in sport in the previous week, with similar rates for girls and boys.

"We want to continue to build on these results through the actions outlined in our Diet and Healthy Weight Delivery Plan as well as participation in initiatives such as our Active Schools programme which is at a record high, with more than seven million sessions delivered before school, during lunchtime and after school in the past year."
