Call for clarity over EU citizens' future

Concerns voiced as EU exit talks start.

The UK Government must act immediately to confirm the status of Scotland’s 181,000 EU nationals now Brexit negotiations are underway, Europe Minister Alasdair Allan has said.

Dr Allan was speaking as dozens of EU nationals living in Scotland prepare to gather in Edinburgh tonight to voice their concerns about the impact of Brexit.

The event will also outline the Scottish Government’s policy approach to the free movement of EU nationals.

Dr Allan said:

“There has been a lot of interest in this event. the UK government’s chaotic preparation for Brexit talks underlines the sense of uncertainty felt by EU nationals living and working in Scotland.

“With Brexit talks underway, the UK Government should now, with immediate effect, guarantee the rights of EU nationals to remain in the UK after Brexit.

“The Scottish Government strongly supports continued membership of the Single Market, including freedom of movement, because of the clear economic and social benefits.

“It is essential that we continue to grow our working population to generate new jobs and help pay for public services. Removing Scotland from the Single Market will cause serious, permanent damage to our economy.”

Minister for International Development and Europe Alasdair Allan and Minister for UK Negotiations on Scotland's Place in Europe Mike Russell will meet EU nationals tonight at the Grassmarket Community Project, 86 Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh EH1 2QA. The event is fully booked.
