Patients should be notified of their waiting time as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and provided with clear details of how to contact the service should their symptoms change or they have further questions. This should include information and advice on how to seek support from local patient support groups. This will allow patients with worsening symptoms to contact the most appropriate service.
Wherever possible patients should be sent information at the earliest opportunity, to support shared decision making and enable the patient to opt in to a discussion with a clinician about their care.
Most patients will have an established relationship with their GP or Clinical team – clinical categorisation should be explained clearly to patients including which category they are being placed in and what this means in real terms for their current waiting time.
