Details of specialism

My work supports the Blue Economy. I am interested in the interactions between salmonid fish and their environment. My primary research focus is on the risk sea lice parasites pose to wild Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). I am interested in understanding broad scale distribution of sea lice in the coastal zone, the likely wild fish migration routes and the fine scale interactions between the host fish and the parasites to use this knowledge to help inform sustainable management of the species.

Within the broad topic area of sea lice research my particular focuses currently include:

  • bio-physical and statistical modelling to infer;
    • sea lice dispersion patterns
    • interactions of wild and farmed salmon
  • quantifying potential fine scale interactions of migrating salmon with endemic lice populations

Main policy links

  • area management strategies for sea lice
  • finfish aquaculture
  • marine planning (science advice)
  • fish and shellfish health advice
  • impacts of climate change on fish health

External committees and responsibilities

  • invited reviewer for scientific journals
