Industry Profiles

Please find below summary profiles for six different industry sectors.

Profile of Scottish Manufacturing Sector

 
  • in 2021, cash terms Gross Value Added (GVA) in manufacturing amounted to £14.3 billion. Compared to GVA in services sector of £56.2 billion (excludes the financial sector and parts of the public sector) and £8.5 billion in construction. The remaining sectors, covered by the Annual Business Survey (ABS), amounted to £20.4 billion (oil and gas extraction accounted for £10.3 billion of this, note that the ABS includes off-shore oil and gas activity)                                                                                                           
  • at a broad sector level, between 2020 and 2021, GVA in manufacturing increased by around £2.1 billion (17.5%). GVA of £14.3 billion in manufacturing in 2021 is above pre-pandemic levels
  • Scottish manufacturing accounted for around 7.0% of total UK manufacturing in terms of turnover and 8.4% of GVA in 2021 
  • the three largest contributions to GVA within manufacturing in 2021 came from the beverages industry [SIC 11] at £2.4 billion (16.8% of total manufacturing GVA), chemicals and chemical products industry [SIC 20] at £1.7 billion (11.7%) & food products industry [SIC 10] at £1.4 billion (10.1%). Together these three industry divisions accounted for around 39% of total manufacturing GVA      
  • in 2021, within manufacturing, foreign-owned companies accounted for 40.9% of GVA and 31.0% of employment, whilst UK (Scotland registered) firms accounted for 43.1% of GVA and 59.8% of employment. By comparison, in the services sector, foreign-owned companies accounted for 25.5% of GVA and 17.0% of employment, whilst UK (Scotland registered) firms accounted for 54.6% of GVA and 64.9% of employment 
  • the local authority areas contributing most to total GVA within manufacturing in 2021 were Renfrewshire (11.2%), Glasgow City (8.4%) and Fife (8.1%)

Manufacture of Wearing Apparel saw the largest year-on-year aGVA percentage increase, with aGVA increasing by 103.1% (from £52 million to £106 million) between 2020 and 2021. Whilst next largest increase was in Other Manufacturing e.g. of medical instruments, with aGVA increasing by 90.1% (from £315 million to £599 million) between 2020 and 2021.

Profile of Scottish Spirits Sector

 
  • in 2021, Gross Value Added (GVA) in the Scottish spirits sector was £2.2 billion, whilst turnover stood at £4.0 billion. GVA between 2020 and 2021 increased by £0.4 billion (21.5%)   
  • the Scottish spirits sector accounts for a vast proportion of the total UK output of the industry (around 85% for turnover and 92% of GVA in 2021). Compared to the whole of manufacturing, where Scotland accounted for around 7% of turnover and 8% of GVA of total UK manufacturing in 2021
  • in 2021, spirits accounted for 11% of turnover and 15% of GVA in Scottish manufacturing as a whole 
  • the importance of the spirits sector in the Scottish Beverages industry is demonstrated by the fact that it accounted for 80.9% of its total turnover and 89.8% of its total GVA in 2021. See Chart below               
  • in 2021, average GVA per head (£238,500) was around three times greater than that found in the manufacturing sector as a whole (£80,600). Whilst labour costs per head (£55,500) were around 50% higher compared to total for manufacturing sector (£37,800) in 2021                   
  • the top five local authority areas in terms of GVA in 2021 (Fife, Glasgow City, West Dunbartonshire, Moray and North Lanarkshire) together accounted for 30% of the business sites, 61% of employment, 67% of turnover and 71% of GVA in the spirits sector

This sector also accounted for 80.9% of turnover and 73.8% of employment within Beverages. The second largest sector contributing most to total GVA within Beverages was soft drinks (5.6%). This sector also accounted for 7.7% of turnover and 11.5% of employment within Beverages.

Profile of Scottish Shipbuilding Sector

 
  • in 2021, Gross Value Added (GVA) in the Scottish shipbuilding sector was around £0.4 billion, whilst turnover stood at £1.0 billion                                                                                
  • Scottish shipbuilding accounted for a fairly significant proportion of total UK output of the industry (around 19% for turnover and 15% for GVA in 2021). Compared to the whole of manufacturing, where Scotland accounted for around 7% of turnover and 8% of GVA of total UK manufacturing in 2021 
  • shipbuilding is a very significant contributor in the Scottish Transport related manufacturing sector. It accounted for 49.9% of total GVA in the related sectors (worth £0.8 billion in 2021). See Chart below 
  • the top five local authority areas in 2021 (Glasgow City, Aberdeen City, Inverclyde, Aberdeenshire and Fife) accounted for 32% of the business sites, 82% of employment, 90% of turnover and 88% of GVA in the sector 
  • in 2021, the shipbuilding sector accounted for around 3% of turnover and GVA in Scottish manufacturing as a whole

Profile of Scottish Aerospace Sector 

 
  • in 2021, Gross Value Added (GVA) in the Scottish aerospace sector was around £0.2 billion (2.7% of UK total), whilst turnover stood around £1.2 billion (5.3% of UK total) 
  • aerospace is a significant contributor in the Scottish Transport related manufacturing sector. It accounted for 26.6% of total GVA in the related sector (worth £0.8 billion in 2021). See Chart below                                                                         
  • the top three local authority areas in 2021 (South Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Glasgow City) accounted for 31% of the business sites in the Aerospace sector, 84% of employment, 93% of turnover and 85% of GVA 
  • in 2021, the aerospace sector accounted for around 3% of turnover and 1% of GVA in Scottish manufacturing as a whole

Profile of Scottish Construction Sector

 
  • in 2021, cash terms Gross Value Added (GVA) in construction amounted to £8.5 billion. Compared to GVA in services sector of £56.2 billion (excludes the financial sector and parts of the public sector) and £14.3 billion in in manufacturing. The remaining sectors, covered by the Annual Business Survey (ABS), amounted to £20.4 billion (oil and gas extraction accounted for £10.3 billion of this, note that the ABS includes off-shore oil and gas activity)
  • at a broad sector level, between 2020 and 2021, GVA in construction increased by £1.7 billion (25.8%). GVA of £8.5 billion in construction in 2021 is above pre-pandemic levels
  • Scottish construction accounted for around 7.2% of total UK construction in terms of turnover and 7.5% of GVA in 2021
  • the sub-sectors making the largest contribution to construction GVA in 2021 were construction of residential and non-residential buildings (30.6%) & electrical, plumbing and other construction installation activities (24.6%). See Chart below   
  • in 2021, within construction, foreign-owned companies accounted for 7.2% of GVA and 8.5% of employment, whilst UK (Scotland registered) firms accounted for 80.5% of GVA and 85.2% of employment. By comparison, within manufacturing, foreign-owned companies accounted for 40.9% of GVA and 31.0% of employment, whilst UK (Scotland registered) firms accounted for 43.1% of GVA and 59.8% of employment
  • the local authority areas contributing most to total GVA within construction in 2021 were Glasgow City (13.2%), North Lanarkshire (10.4%) and City of Edinburgh (7.9%)

Profile of Scottish Retail Sector

 
  • in 2021, Gross Value Added (GVA) in the Scottish retail sector was £5.9 billion (7.2% of UK total), whilst turnover stood at £23.8 billion (5.8% of UK total)                                                                        
  • GVA in the Scottish retail sector increased by 8.8% between 2020 and 2021 (from £5.4 billion to £5.9 billion)          
  • the sub-sectors making the largest contribution to retail GVA in 2021 were retail sale in non-specialised stores (48.9%)  (e.g. supermarkets) and retail sale of other goods in specialised stores (26.4%) (e.g. clothing shops, chemists). See Chart below
  • the local authority areas contributing most to total GVA within retail in 2021 were Glasgow City (12.6%) and City of Edinburgh (10.4%). These two local authority areas together accounted for around 27% of the business sites, 26% of employment, 23% of turnover and 23% of GVA in the Scottish retail sector
  • retail is an important contributor to the services sector (excludes the financial sector and parts of the public sector). Within services, the three largest contributions to GVA in 2021 were from: Retail trade [SIC 47] at £5.9 billion (10.5% of total services GVA), wholesale trade [SIC 46] at £5.1 billion (9.1%) and architectural & engineering activities [SIC 71] at £5.1 billion (9.1%)
