Appendix 5: SHeS 2016-2019 – Living alone or with others

A: Mental wellbeing by age and living alone or with others
Mental wellbeing was highest in the 'Cohabits' group with mean WEMWBS scores of 52.2 for 65-69 year olds, 52.1 for 70-74 year olds and 50.7 for 75+. For those in the 'Lives alone' group the figures were 50.5, 48.6 and 49.5 respectively.
B: Possible psychiatric disorder by age and living alone or with others
For those in the 'cohabits' group, 10% in the 65-69 year old group showed symptoms of possible psychiatric disorder, 10% in the 70-74 year olds and 12% in 75+. For  those in the 'Lives alone' group, the percentages were 14%, 15% and 15% respectively.
C: 2 or more anxiety symptoms by age and living alone or with others
For those in the 'cohabits' group, 8% of 65-69 year olds displayed 2 or more anxiety symptoms, 8% of 70-74 year olds and 4% of those 75+. The figures for  those in the 'lives alone' group were 7%, 12% and 7% respectively.
D: 2 or more depression symptoms by age and living alone or with others
For those in the 'cohabits' group, 7% of 65-69 year olds displayed 2 or more depression symptoms, 7% of 70-74 year olds and 10% of those 75+. The figures for those in the 'lives alone' group were 11%, 9% and 7% respectively.
