Updates

This content is no longer being updated. You can find out about the Scottish Welfare Fund on the income related benefits section on beta.gov.scot.

How to apply

The SWF is processed and administered through your local council, and all applications must be made to them.  A list of contact details for all councils can be found on these webpages.

To be eligible to apply for a Crisis Grant or Community Care Grant through the SWF, you must be aged 16 or over, and be on a low income.

If you contact the Scottish Government to apply for a SWF grant, this will delay your application.

The statutory guidance used to make decisions from 1 April 2016 is published on the Scottish Government website. You can view this, as well as the Welfare Funds (Scotland) Act 2015 and Welfare Funds (Scotland) Regulations 2016 to ensure that the correct rules have been applied to your application.

The statutory guidance also lists items which cannot be awarded through the SWF at Annex A.

If you have applied already for a SWF grant and are unhappy with the outcome, you can ask the council to review this decision.  You must always, in the first instance, approach the council who made the decision in the first place to look at it again.

If you approach the Scottish Government to ask for a review, this will delay the process.

More information on the review process can be found on your local councils webpages.
