Commission for Fair Access

The Commission on Widening Access was established in April 2015 to advise Ministers on the steps necessary to achieve the ambition, expressed in the 2014/15 Programme for Government, that a child born today, irrespective of socioeconomic background, should have an equal chance of entering university by the time he or she leaves school.

The Commission published its final report in March 2016. One of the key recommendations was for the appointment of an independent Commissioner for Fair Access.  A Commissioner was felt critical to driving progress in the coming years by providing the leadership and system wide approach necessary to advance fair access in Scotland.
