Scotland’s public services should be shaped around people’s needs and be easily-accessible, while also being delivered effectively and efficiently. Evolving Digital technologies offer great potential for public sector organisations to deliver wide-ranging advances on both of those fronts.
Today, the majority of people are accessing the internet through their smartphones, laptops and tablets to receive information and to find services on the move.
Crucially, new technologies not only allow greater scope for people to do things themselves, but also to contribute opinions, access information and interact with others. There is significant potential to transform how the public sector operates, with entirely new services and products becoming possible. Online delivery can make public services easier, quicker and more convenient for people to use, while also being less expensive than many other methods.
Digital Public Services Strategy
Our strategy, Scotland’s Digital Future: Delivery of Public Services , was jointly introduced by Ministers and CoSLA and was published in September 2012. It was developed with and for the Scottish public sector, working with industry, and those who use services. It sets out collective ambitions and National Level Actions to deliver on these and so facilitate action at sector, cluster or organisational level. The strategy provides a framework for other public sector strategies - NHS Scotland; Local Government; Central Government (Scottish Government its agencies and non-departmental bodies including the Police and Fire services; Universities and Colleges).
Summary of Progress - Sectoral Strategies
Priority actions have been developed and refined as our policy thinking has moved forward and as we try to keep pace with the fast moving technology developments. We continue to update an Action Plan which summarises our actions to date and outlines how proposals have been refined, implemented or refocused. The plan includes a forward look to 2020 and the National Level Actions are summarised into the following themes:
- Citizen Focus
- Privacy and Openness
- A Skilled and Empowered Workforce
- Collaboration and Value for Money
Any enquiries relating to the national strategy and action plan should first be directed to DPS@scotland.gsi.gov.uk. Every effort will be made to respond, or pass your query on to the responsible team / individual leading on that specific topic, within 3 working days.
