Development Plan Progress around Scotland

In the plan-led system that we aspire to, up to date coverage of plans is essential.

Strategic Development Plans

  • It is a legal requirement to submit SDPs to Scottish Ministers within 4 years of approval of the existing plan

Local Development Plans

  • For those LDPs in SDP areas Scottish Ministers expect the LDP to be adopted within 2 years of the approval of the SDP
  • It is a legal requirement to adopt LDPs within 5 years of adoption of the previous LDP.

The Circular contains flowcharts setting out the normal process for preparing SDPs and LDPs, with typical timings.

Development Plan Schemes

Every year all planning authorities in Scotland produce a development plan scheme which sets out the programme for preparing and reviewing their development plans, and what is likely to be involved at each stage.

Get involved and target your involvement, Development Plan schemes are available on planning authorities’ websites.

Managing the Process

Good management of the process of preparing development plans is vital, to keeping development plans on track and avoiding slippage.
