Poverty and Priority Family Statistics

The Scottish Government has compiled evidence on each of the priority family groups which details the unique structural barriers they are likely to face and emphasises the need for services which address these barriers.

Across Scotland in 2022-2025, around 21% of children were living in relative poverty after housing costs. Before housing costs, it is estimated that 19% of children were in relative poverty ^[1] .

Data shows that children in the six priority families are more likely to be in poverty, and collectively account for around 90% of the children in relative poverty in Scotland - 30% of children in lone parent families, 40% of children in minority ethnic families, 23% of children in families with a disabled person, 39% of children in families with a child under one, and 38% of children in families with three or more children are in relative poverty ^[2] .
