Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Pathway – National Framework - summary

Summary of the national framework setting out the plan for the Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing pathway

Strategic Objectives

The framework focuses on equal access, clear pathways, and better support for providers. Its objectives are:

  • Equal access to services across Scotland, regardless of geography or personal circumstances
  • Clear and timely pathways to the right help, reducing unnecessary delays and confusion
  • Improved support for providers and families, recognising their role in veterans’ wellbeing
  • Veteran-centric design, ensuring veterans are involved in service planning and evaluation
  • Integration of statutory and third-sector services to create seamless care pathways
  • Better data collection and evaluation to inform improvements and monitor equity
  • Workforce development to build capacity and cultural competence

These objectives are supported by commitments to trauma-informed compassionate practice, reducing stigma, and promoting collaboration. For example, making connections between mental health care and housing, employment, and social support, is likely to provide better and sustained outcomes for the veteran.
