Community Catchups and Community Gathering

Summary

'In the last few years the concept of community has become key to the sustained growth of startups, and communities play a key role in the Scottish technology ecosystem.

This project consists of three workshops and a one day gathering designed to bring the practice in building communities for the Scottish ecosystem to learn from. The in-person events will take place in CodeBase Edinburgh, but will be live streamed for the world to take part.​​'

Tech Startup Foundations

Summary

'Tech Startup Foundations will be a free, self-paced, online course designed to teach the fundamentals of creating a technology startup business in Scotland. There are many potential technology startup entrepreneurs in Scotland. A variety of barriers can prevent them from exploring this career path. This course will be aimed at demystifying technology product startups and providing a foundational entrepreneurial skill set.
The course will cover topics such as market research, customer development, raising financing and testing business and product ideas. Each module will offer a mix of pre-recorded videos, articles, curated resources from the web and practical exercises to apply learning.'

Tech Embers

Summary

'Community Lab’s ‘Tech Embers’ project combines funding from the our Ecosystem Fund with a purpose-built digital platform to empower “remote and underserved” areas of Scotland with direct access to the wider tech ecosystem.

The immediate goal is identifying communities that are geographically-remote or socially-isolated from Scotland’s tech ecosystem, strike-up conversations with local change-makers and support them with the necessary resources to deliver a chain of successful events.

The vision is a nationwide ecosystem of self-sustaining tech communities that position Scotland as an inclusive, diversified tech culture — empowering change-makers with the tools they need to inspire action, unite communities, and discover new possibilities.'

CreativeTech Scotland Gathering

Summary

'Creative Edinburgh, with Codebase, Creative Informatics and Edinburgh Futures Institute as partners in the project Creative Informatics Cluster will host an event for the Scottish creative technology and data-driven innovation creative community. The gathering will draw together creative tech and data practitioners from across the creative industries of Scotland, be they commercial companies, start-up innovators, small businesses, or artists and individual creative practitioners using creative tech and data.

The gathering will include demonstrations of creative tech from Scottish companies and artists/practitioners, international speakers, speed networking, panels of industry and academic experts, and bespoke skills sessions from the event partners.'

Summary

'Datafest is a unique Scottish offering and offers unparalleled education to its attendees by delivering world-class content from high-profile international speakers alongside fostering home-grown talent. The content of each year’s Datafest is differentiated through themes.

Under the umbrella Datafest brand, The Data Lab holds a number of standalone targeted headline events such as Data Talent.

Data Talent provides an opportunity for recruiting companies to engage with Scotland’s emerging data talent. The event includes speakers demonstrating their innovative data science projects and providing career conversations with them, skills workshops and panel discussions.'

Summary

'The MarTech Summit will discuss the advancement of Marketing Technologies, from Web Analytics, SEO and eCommerce, to Chatbots, CRM, Business Intelligence and Customer Engagement tools.

The programme will explore the development of digital marketing as a specialism, and consider new techniques and best practice for optimising audience reach, engagement, messaging and sales through the effective use of tools and technologies.

The MarTech Summit is geared for marketing and digital personnel, and geared to create an opportune forum for knowledge exchange, discussion and high-level networking.'

Silicon Valley Scale Teams Programme

Summary

'A three-week online course designed for founders and their senior teams to receive 20+ hours of support to enable an unstoppable mindset, a culture of innovation and exclusive access to a powerful peer network. There is also a trip to Silicon Valley for the founders to learn from industry leaders across Silicon Valley and build transformative teams. As part of the course FutureX will cover themes including; Leadership, Culture, Innovation, Communication and Growth.'

Summary

A 10-week virtual programme that takes founders through a five module (25 step) course and the various startup stages from idea, validation, creation, optimisation and scaling using lean methodology and other common frameworks. Short talks and networking for the Scottish games industry.

Summary

'Short talks and networking for the Scottish games industry to encourage collaboration and communication between local developers, and networking with visiting guests. Attracting international guest speaker Rami Ismail, a Dutch-Egyptian industry ambassador & independent games developer of over 20 titles.

Other speakers visiting from outside Scotland include the British Film Institute's Head of Certification, Anna Mansi, marketing expert Stephen Hey, games specialist lawyers Sheridans, various games publishers, and an array of speakers from across the local Scottish games sector.'

Healthcare has historically and systemically excluded females from biological and medical advancements resulting in inequalities in women’s healthcare in comparison to men. Increasing access to capital for Women entrepreneurs.

Summary

'Access to finance remains the number one barrier to women starting and scaling their businesses. Business angel finance is a critical source of capital for early-stage technology companies, yet in Scotland less than 10% of business angels are women.

Mint Ventures’ project is to educate more women throughout different regions in Scotland to become angel investors and to introduce to women entrepreneurs at an early stage through a series of collaborative events bringing together the eco system using gender-specific learning techniques to build confidence.'

Equity Gap Leaders’ Club

Summary

'Join fellow female founders who run or are in the early stages of a tech startup. You probably don't think of yourself as techy, this can hold us back and restrict our contacts and support network in the field we are working in. 
New Norm is hosting an event(s) where you can meet likeminded female, non-techy, founders who are creating a scalable business that relies on tech (a tech startup some may say). Hear from some of our guest speakers who understand what it's like to build a tech business as a non-tech female and discuss how she overcame some of those challenges.'

Community Network Development

Summary

A series of informal events across Scotland for networking and peer learning at different levels. Events will include small groups dinners with tech founders/CXOs and VIP guest speakers. Interviews with celebrated founders and respected investors will foster connection and sharing of knowledge among peers.

Other events in the series will include networking and education events for aspiring tech startup workers to help them build networks and educate them about how startups operate and how to get their tech careers started successfully.

Supporting Entrepreneurial Ecosystems Workshop (event website TBC)

Summary

'This project will deliver a series of four workshops with the aim of supporting Scotland’s ‘ecosystem builders’ and giving them the tools to further stimulate entrepreneurial behaviour and grow the ecosystem. The question is, how do we create a sustainable ecosystem, that is centred around equality, inclusivity, and inspires Scotland’s (future) entrepreneurs to ‘think big’ and address the most pressing socio-economic-environmental issues of our time?

This series of workshops will take participants on a journey, from understanding the nature of ecosystems (focusing on the ‘mechanisms’ that drive ecosystems) to how the latest research on entrepreneurship and socio-economic dynamics can be translated into practice.'

Investment and corporate innovation roundtable events

Summary

'To realise growth potential Scale-up ventures require substantive capital, Vivolution and its strategic partner Rainmaking will host hybrid in person/remotely accessible sessions to introduce a panel of VC, CV investors based out with Scotland to look at and discuss Series A+ investment strategy, criteria and ambition with a select cohort of appropriately aligned Fintechs. 

To scale Ventures they need adoption and accelerated engagement with corporate ‘partners’. Aligned with the Tech-Nation Fintech Pledge a session will be focused on key aspects including, navigating the complexities of a FS Institution procurement process, validating the need, assumptions and testing market demand and securing early adopters and direct engagement (paid and pilot).'

Women’s Enterprise Scotland

Summary

'The aim is to develop a thriving tech-active and tech-aware women’s business community. In Scotland the tech sector continues to lack gender diversity, yet gender diversity powers radical, step-change innovation – the kind which boosts productivity and our national economy.

Women’s Enterprise Scotland’s project will grow women’s interaction with technology, engaging with international best practice, dedicated masterclasses and peer learning circles. Establishing a vibrant community of like-minded women learning, sharing knowledge and identifying good practice. Ensuring more women play a leading role in the technology sector and Scotland develops the environment where technology-led innovation can thrive.'
