Annex: Questions on tourism in the Scottish Household Survey

The 2025 SHS asked participants the following question about tourism:

I would now like to ask about tourism in your local area. By tourism we mean people visiting your local area for a day trip or overnight stay. How strongly do you agree or disagree with each of the following statements? [strongly agree/tend to agree/neither agree nor disagree/tend to disagree/strongly disagree/not applicable/don’t know]

• Tourism is good for my local area
• Visitors are putting too much pressure on my local area
• Enough action is being taken to address any negative impacts of tourism in my local area
• People in my local area are involved in making decisions about tourism
• Tourism and hospitality is an attractive sector to work in
