Scottish Good Practice Statement on ME-CFS

This document was originally published in 2010. The Scottish Government has undertaken a partial update of the material in August 2022, to insert key changes of practice within the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guideline NG206: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – diagnosis and management, which was published in October 2021.

This represents a first step in updating the Scottish Good Practice Statement. Further work will be undertaken to more comprehensively review the guidance; in the meantime the document's original text has been preserved for reference.

Update

On 29th October 2021, NICE published a guideline on diagnosing and managing myalgic encephalomyelitis (or encephalopathy)/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) in children, young people and adults: Overview | Myalgic encephalomyelitis (or encephalopathy)/chronic fatigue syndrome: diagnosis and management | Guidance | NICE

The Scottish Government has partially upated the 2010 Scottish Good Practice Statement to include the recommendations in the NICE guideline. This information has been highlighted in the PDF only in coloured text boxes such as this one throughout the document. These recommendations supersede the relevant existing text.

We understand how valuable stakeholders have found the Scottish Good Practice Statement and we are committed to making this a living document that is further updated to reflect the latest evidence and guidance. Further work will be undertaken to more comprehensively review the guidance; the document's original text has been preserved for reference in the meantime.
