Equalities monitoring data
Gender, sexual orientation and trans status
Equalities data was available for 530 applicants (9% of all 5,806 applicants). Completion of the equalities monitoring form (EMF) was optional to all applicants. Whilst we cannot draw any conclusions from this sample across the whole population of Redress applicants, of the 530 applicants who responded approximately 36% identified their gender as a woman and approximately 63% identified their gender as a man. A very small number of applicants described their gender identity as ‘other’ or preferred not to say.
Applicants were also asked about their sexual orientation, with most applicants (89%) describing themselves as heterosexual/straight and a smaller proportion of applicants describing themselves as gay/lesbian (3%), bisexual (1%), preferred not to say or ‘in another way’.
Ethnic group and religion
Most (98%) of the 530 applicants for whom equalities data was available specified their ethnic group as White (White Scottish, White Other). A smaller proportion (2%) of applicants specified their ethnic background as Mixed or multiple ethnic groups, Asian, Asian Scottish or Asian British, Caribbean or Black, or preferred not to say.
Disability
Just over two thirds (67%) of the 530 applicants for whom equalities data was available indicated that they had a physical or mental health condition or illness lasting or expected to last 12 months or more. Chart 5 shows the areas affected by applicants’ disability. Applicants were able to select multiple areas affected by disability.

[Note 1] Respondents were asked to select all that apply meaning that the total numbers in the chart exceed the number of applicants.
