Our Scotland, Our Future: Public Engagement Strategy for Climate and Nature - Easy Read version
Easy read version of our plan to help people understand climate change and harm to nature means for their lives.
What we want
Understanding
People need clear information that is easy to get and that helps them understand:
- the problems
- what needs to change
- the part they can play
- what support there is for them to do so
It is important that people can spot false information.
We want people to know:
- the causes and effects of climate change and loss of nature
- the need to act
- our climate and nature goals
- why we need to reach those goals
- the plan for how change can happen
- what people and groups need to do
The plan will help people understand why change can be a good thing. They will know what they can do to help.
Feeling able to act
Knowing about a problem does not always mean people will act. Some things can get in the way:
- cost
- being busy
- it is hard to take action alone or without support
We will help people act. By:
- showing how people can take action together as part of a group or community
- sharing people’s stories of action they’ve taken
- helping people develop new skills and knowledge
- helping people learn from each other and find ways to take action in their area
We know people are worried about climate change and damage to nature.
The plan shows how we can work together and make changes. This can help with the problems of climate change and improve people’s lives.
Be listened to
It is important for people to have a say in decisions about the climate and nature. What they know about their local community can help us develop plans. We can take action that will work for them.
We want to make sure:
- people have the chance to share their views
- they feel safe and welcome when they talk
- communities have a say in decisions that affect their lives
- people who make decisions listen
- that we show how people's ideas have made a difference.
People are more likely to understand and support changes if they feel they have a say.
