1.6 ScotAccount purpose and aims – summary

ScotAccount provides a secure and simple way for individuals to prove their identity when accessing digital public services. The aims are to:

  • Enable secure sign-in for multiple public services through a single account using two-factor authentication.
  • Provide identity verification to protect users against fraud and ensure entitlement to services.
  • Allow users to save and reuse verified attributes (e.g. name, date of birth, address) across services, reducing duplication and effort.
  • Enhance privacy and user control, ensuring only the minimum necessary information is shared, in line with Scottish Government Identity Management and Privacy Principles.
  • Promote inclusion and accessibility by meeting the Digital Scotland Service Standard and maintaining offline routes for those who cannot or choose not to use digital channels.
