Residential rehabilitation bed capacity in Scotland, August 2026
This publication reports on the findings from a survey of drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation facilities in Scotland to provide statistics on bed capacity.
Findings
The survey received responses from 30 residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities with bed capacity that meet the Residential Rehabilitation Development Working Group’s definition of residential rehabilitation. This is two more facilities than were identified in October 2025 (28 facilities).
Facilities were asked to report on their maximum number of beds for residential rehabilitation treatment. Beds exclusively reserved for other forms of treatment, such as detoxification or managed withdrawal, are not included in the count of maximum number of beds for residential rehabilitation treatment.
The 2026 survey found a total maximum residential rehabilitation capacity of 619 beds in Scotland. This was an increase of 45 beds (8%) compared to the October 2025 figure of 574 beds. Table 1 shows maximum reported residential rehabilitation bed capacity by facility in 2025 and 2026.
All facilities (100%) offer residential rehabilitation for both problematic drug use and problematic alcohol use.
The majority of facilities (90%, n = 27) accept referrals from all ADP areas in Scotland. Three facilities reported only accepting referrals from their immediate or surrounding ADP areas.
The majority of facilities (93%, n = 28) report that they currently accept publicly funded placements. One facility was unable to confirm whether it accepts public funding, and one reported that it does not.
The intended duration of residential rehabilitation programmes varied between facilities, and some facilities offered multiple programme options. Intended duration ranged between three weeks and 12 months. Six months was the most commonly reported intended duration. Seven facilities did not specify a fixed intended duration, reporting that length of stay was dependent on individual circumstances.
In addition to residential capacity, some facilities also offer rehabilitation treatment on a day client or outpatient basis. Eight facilities (27%) reported that they accept clients on a day or outpatient basis for drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation.
Full names of facilities and their ADP location can be found in Appendix A.
