The statistics in this release are based on administrative records and surveys of individual public sector bodies carried out by the Scottish Government and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The publication includes information on public sector employment in Scotland with distinctions made for employment in devolved bodies and reserved bodies (located in Scotland).

Reserved Public Sector consists ofthe following staff groups: Civil Service, Public Bodies, Armed Forces, Public Corporations, Public Sector Financial Institutions (as shown in Table 5)
3. Northern Rock classified to public sector from Q4 2007. Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc and Lloyds Banking Group plc classified to the public sector from Q4 2008.
* Estimates for Q1 2011 include 6,700 temporary staff recruited to carry out the 2011 census
