Details of specialism
I work to improve the biological basis for fisheries management through a better understanding of fish population structuring, reproductive ecology, recruitment and distribution. I have also worked extensively on predator-prey interactions and rare marine species in support of conservation objectives. I have an international network of colleagues and have co-ordinated and participated in 11 EU funded projects, 3 multi-national projects and 10 national projects in subjects including fish stock dynamics, fisheries induced evolution and marine protected areas.
Within the broad topic area my particular focuses currently include:
- climate change impacts on food webs
- population structuring influences on gadoid population dynamics
- importance of nursery habitat on fish recruitment
- role of marine protected areas in conserving biodiversity
Main policy links
- marine planning and policy
- sea fish
External committees and responsibilities
- ICES Science Committee
- advice on Marine Protected Areas and closed areas to ICES, NatureScot, JNCC
- Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership - Fish and climate change advice
- editorial board - Fishes
- PhD Supervisor - University of Aberdeen, Glasgow, St. Andrews
- member EU COST Sea-Unicorn
