Labour productivity statistics: 2024

An Official Statistics in Development publication for Scotland.

Annual estimates of labour productivity statistics for Scotland’s onshore economy for the years 1998-2024

Revisions

In this release, Scotland’s productivity statistics have been open for revision in all periods due to revisions to the source data for both output (gross value added) and labour inputs, however revisions are small in most years before 2023.

The main updates since the last release have been the replacement of provisional employee job estimates, based on short term employment surveys, with the more comprehensive regional estimates from ONS and industry breakdowns using the Business Register Employment Survey, and the reweighting of the Labour Force Survey back to 2019, which has had an impact on the estimates of average hours worked.

Growth in output per job in 2023 has been revised up from 0.1% to 0.9% due to a combination of upwardly revised GDP growth and downwardly revised jobs figures. For output per hour, there has been no revision to the fall of 1.1% in 2023, with the downward revision to jobs being offset by an upward revision to the estimate of average weekly hours per job.
