Part of
Data and methodology
- Data used to compile this publication is sourced mainly from the annual housing return that local authorities provide to the Scottish Government once a year.
- The annual housing returns ask for information on local authority housing stock and management, as well as information relating to demolitions, rehabilitations, scheme of assistance, and homes of multiple occupation licenses.
- Our housing stock by housing tenure estimates are based on administrative data collected through the annual housing return for local authorities, dwelling and empty/second home estimates published by the National Records of Scotland, and data on housing association stock collected by the Scottish Housing Regulator.
- We have also referenced data from the Scottish Household Survey (SHS), details of the methodology and survey fieldwork outcomes relating to the 2025 SHS can be found on our website. These statistics have not been assessed as accredited official statistics by the Office for Statistics Regulation.
- The SHS asks some questions on a biannual basis: this includes data relating to social housing waiting lists and housing satisfaction; therefore, we have not been able to comment on these aspects in this publication.
- No statistical tests were conducted to look at differences in terms of statistical significance.
