Health and social care staff experience survey 2022

Independent report by Webropol providing detailed information and analysis of staff experience in health and social care across Scotland during 2022

Appendix 11: Team Size

The table following shows consistency across all Geographic Boards with an average team size of between 12 and 15 people. The patient-facing National Boards tend to be smaller team sizes with NHS 24 averaging 6 people per team and Scottish Ambulance Service 9 people. Of the Support Boards three are smaller average team sizes ranging from 5 to 11 people. The outlier is Public Health Scotland where the average team size of 61 is almost 5 times the average team size across all other Health and Social Care Boards.

Public Health Scotland is only in its second run of iMatter and is still in the progress of agreeing organisational structures including team structures. In April 2022 the senior team to Head of Service level was in place and for this year it was agreed in Partnership to run with larger teams. We envisage that during this year further organisational change will take place leaving us better placed to create smaller iMatter teams for 2023

Across Health and Social Care 35% of small teams have 4 people in them, 31% have 3 people and 34% have 2 or less people in them. 41% of teams with 4 people received a report, having achieved a 100% response rate. 51% of teams of 3 and 61% of teams of 2 or less people received reports.

The table following shows the proportion of teams of each size within each Board and the proportion receiving a report. Typically, it is teams of 4 people that are least likely to receive a report, reflecting the need for all 4 staff to complete the survey.
